| Breaking News | | Sunday, September 13th, 1931: Key Bewilders Brown Caps All went well for Jimmy Key of the Leicestershire Foxes as he pitched his team to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Surrey Brown Caps, limiting them to 3 hits while ringing up 7 strikeouts and surrendering 1 walk.
In the postgame interview, both managers had glowing things to say about Key.
His manager described him this way: "He's got a good selection of pitches he can throw at a guy. He changes speed, gives different looks to different hitters. When he's on his game, he's quite a handful."
The Surrey skipper said, "He doesn't give you anything twice. It's a guessing game with him and today my club was always guessing wrong."
His record in 1931 is 10-11 in 31 starts and Key has a 3.22 ERA. | | Saturday, September 5th, 1931: Jefferies Joins 3-HR Club Gregg Jefferies of Surrey slugged three home runs against the Yorkshire at Brit Oval. Nevertheless he couldn't win the game all by himself. The Phoenix spoiled his record-setting day by defeating the Brown Caps 8-7.
His manager complained at the SION press conference, "The loss puts a damper on his outstanding game, but Gregg still will get his name in the league record books. That is some consolation. But knowing him, he would have preferred a win."
Commenting on his explosive day, the Surrey second baseman said, "The first two I got all of them and it was no doubt they were gone. The last one I got lucky. It seemed like the wind helped it a little. Old Mother Nature helped me get into the record books. I wish she had helped us win the game, too."
For the game Jefferies was 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
G. Jefferies grounded out in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off T. Carleton in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off G. Liebhardt in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off A. Jones in the 9th.
This season Jefferies has delivered 140 hits in 498 at-bats for a .281 average with 18 home runs. He is getting on base at a .344 clip and his totals also include 55 RBIs and 79 runs scored. This year Jefferies has played in 125 games. | | Friday, August 14th, 1931: Ken Williams Out for One Week It took the Surrey team doctor a while to realize it, but left fielder Ken Williams won't simply play through a sore knee after he got hurt running the bases in today's Outlaws-Brown Caps game. At first, it looked like Williams might be back as early as tomorrow, but now the prognosis isn't quite so good; he's expected to miss at least one week. A spokesman for the club described the loss of Williams as a blow, but was confident that he'd be back soon.
Williams is hitting .260 this year with 8 home runs and 42 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .360, 51 walks and scored 52 times. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 60-102, .370 PCT | | Position in Division | 6th, 29.0 GB | | Record at home | 32-49, .395 PCT | | Record on the road | 28-53, .346 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 6-9, .400 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 20-22, .476 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 10-30, .250 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 50-72, .410 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 4-6, .400 PCT | | Record in April | 5-17, .227 PCT | | Record in May | 9-19, .321 PCT | | Record in June | 11-16, .407 PCT | | Record in July | 7-19, .269 PCT | | Record in August | 16-12, .571 PCT | | Record in September | 11-16, .407 PCT | | Record in October | 1-3, .250 PCT |
