He told his pitching philosophy to sportswriters in the postgame interview after his 1-0 victory over Nottinghamshire.
He blanked them on a 3-hitter, allowed 1 walk and had 2 strikeouts. "I really felt comfortable the whole game," Long said.
His manager echoed his comments, saying, "He hit his spots time and time again."
So far this season Long has a 17-7 record with a 2.76 ERA. | | Tuesday, October 3rd, 1922: Wingo Has Hot Hand, Bangs 5 hits There are moments in a player's career that are etched into their memories forever. Ivey Wingo of the Kent Spitfires had one of those moments when he went 5 for 7 at the plate today in the 5-2 win over the Nottinghamshire Outlaws at St. Lawrence.
The 22-year-old catcher told reporters in the postgame interview, "This is a day I won't forget soon, but I'll settle to just get a hit or two every day...enough hits to hang around the league a little bit longer... like 10... 15 more years maybe."
I. Wingo singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, singled in the 7th, struck out in the 9th, singled in the 12th and hit a three-run home run off R. Eastwick in the 14th.
This season Wingo is swinging the bat at a .311 pace. He has hit 3 home runs and scored 75 times, while driving in 54. His on-base percentage is .368 and he has played in 137 games. | | Saturday, September 30th, 1922: Zambrano Mystifies Nottinghamshire Worcestershire starter Carlos Zambrano really did a number on the Outlaws today, shutting them out 2-0 on 2 hits in a complete game victory. He issued 2 walks and had 12 strikeouts.
In his postgame comments, the Nottinghamshire manager said, "We didn't have good at-bats. I don't make excuses, but when we were playing the game, our energy didn't show. That comes from either extremely good pitching or extremely lousy hitting... seeing as our team has a bunch of pretty good hitters, I have to tip my cap to Carlos... he did an outstanding job today."
In 1922 Zambrano has compiled a 25-7 mark with a 2.75 ERA in 34 starts. In pitching 239 innings he has 293 strikeouts and 100 walks while limiting the opposition to a .199 batting average. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | P Razor Ledbetter | torn rotator cuff muscle | 6 months | On DL, eligible for return (60-day DL) | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 101-61, .623 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 47-34, .580 PCT | | Record on the road | 54-27, .667 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 9-8, .529 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 39-20, .661 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 23-11, .676 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 78-50, .609 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 7-3, .700 PCT | | Record in April | 15-10, .600 PCT | | Record in May | 18-10, .643 PCT | | Record in June | 19-8, .704 PCT | | Record in July | 14-11, .560 PCT | | Record in August | 16-12, .571 PCT | | Record in September | 18-10, .643 PCT | | Record in October | 1-0, 1.000 PCT |
