| Breaking News |  | Saturday, August 18th, 1923: Sperry Rips Lancashire-2nd-IX for 5 Hits If the Lancashire-2nd-IX Lightning know how best to pitch the Pembroke-2nd-IX second baseman Stan Sperry they didn't tip their hand today. Instead Sperry showed he knew how best to hit them as he easily handled Lightning pitching, going 5 for 5 and helping the Red Foxes to a 7-0 triumph at Ballpark of Pembroke.
He told SION reporters in the postgame interview, "The way I was swinging today, I think I could have closed my eyes and hit the ball."
The Lancashire-2nd-IX skipper quipped, "Well, the next time we may just do that...blindfold him...and then pitch him differently, just to be sure."
S. Sperry singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
Sperry is presently hitting at a .286 pace with no home runs and 6 RBIs. He has played in 42 games and scored 6 times. |  | Thursday, August 16th, 1923: Knowlson Befuddles Pembroke-2nd-IX Tom Knowlson of Middlesex-2nd-IX easily handled the Pembroke-2nd-IX Red Foxes, stopping them on 4 hits and chucking a complete game 4-0 shutout.
"He really did a job on us," said the Pembroke-2nd-IX manager. "He had good command of his pitches. He changed speeds well and pretty much confused us. We never could zero in on him, but he certainly zeroed in on us."
Knowlson said, "Everything was working for me. Throwing my breaking stuff over the plate was big."
He finished the game with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks in a solid outing.

Kent-2nd-IX first baseman Johnny Cooney put on quite a show at Mole Park with a big 5-hit day in the 19-10 victory over the Pembroke-2nd-IX Red Foxes.
In the postgame interview, he said with a smile, "Not a bad day at the plate...5-5...wish I could do this more often. It would do wonders for my batting average...and my salary, too."
J. Cooney singled in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off R. Monteagudo in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit a three-run home run off I. Delock in the 8th and walked in the 9th.
This season Cooney has banged out 101 hits in 360 at-bats for a .281 average with 5 home runs.
