| Breaking News | | Friday, May 9th, 1930: Great Stroke! Jones Gets 5 Hits! It seemed that Essex right fielder Fielder Jones could do no wrong today, but it still didn't come out right. The Eagles still dropped the game to the Sharks by the score of 6-5. He did all he could, rapping out 5 hits in 6 at-bats, but in the end, Sussex prevailed in the ballgame at Ford County Ground.
"I felt real good today, but my best just wasn't enough. We didn't play well enough to win. I saw the ball well and just wanted to make good contact and put the ball in play. The balls just fell in for base hits. Some days they do that," Jones explained in the postgame press interview.
F. Jones singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th, hit a solo-shot off J. Rincon in the 9th, walked in the 11th and flied out in the 13th.
So far this season Jones is hitting .248 with 1 home run, 9 RBIs and 19 runs scored. He has 28 hits in 113 at-bats and a .333 OBP. | | Friday, May 9th, 1930: Sussex's Youngs Out 2 Weeks "I'm frustrated right now," said Sussex right fielder Ross Youngs. "I can't help this team by sitting on the bench or in the training room." Unfortunately for the Sharks, that's where he will be spending the next 2 weeks. Youngs suffered a damaged meniscus in today's game against Essex while being hit by a pitch. "Believe me," he said, "I won't be out a day longer than I have to be."
In 27 games this year Youngs has posted a .282 average and put up these numbers: no home runs, 13 RBIs and 17 runs scored. | | Tuesday, May 6th, 1930: Middlesex Shuts Out Sussex In an almost effortless performance, Paul Derringer of the Crusaders shot down the Sharks 6-0 on a 5-hit shutout.
His skipper said, "Paul was just locating so well and using his pitches...not leaving anything over the plate."
Derringer recorded 7 strikeouts and 3 walks in a strong outing.
In the postgame press conference, the Sussex manager said, "When he needed to make pitches, he elevated his game like he can and we couldn't get a key hit off him."
Thus far this season Derringer has posted a 3-3 record, started 7 games, struck out 44 batters in 57 innings and compiled a 2.53 ERA. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | RF Ross Youngs | damaged meniscus (knee) | 1-2 weeks | Not on DL | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 23-8, .742 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 11-3, .786 PCT | | Record on the road | 12-5, .706 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 4-0, 1.000 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 10-1, .909 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 4-3, .571 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 19-5, .792 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 8-2, .800 PCT | | Record in April | 16-6, .727 PCT | | Record in May | 7-2, .778 PCT |
